Consistent Walter Team Converge On Rosehill

3 minute read

Guy Walter heads to Rosehill on Saturday with an ultra consistent group of fillies and mares who he considers all strong winning chances in their respective events spearheaded by Foxstar and Brightest.

Guy Walter will saddle up five runners during Rosehill's eight race programme on Saturday all of which are currently quoted at single figure odds in early markets.

Immaculately bred filly Brightest is currently the shortest priced of Guy Walter's team as she looks to record a fourth straight win in a Benchmark 75 3YO Fillies Handicap (1400m).

Brightest will face similar opposition to what she met when claiming her first metropolitan win last month over the same distance and Walter believes the filly will again be fighting out the finish.

“1400m, she would probably prefer it a little longer, but it is a month between runs so she will also be fresh,” Walter said.

By Galileo, Brightest is out of Danehill mare Wasimah who is a half sister to Group 1 performed sprinter and stallion Kaphero.

By a stallion known for his staying progeny and out of a sprinting mare, Walter believes Brightest could be destined for a race career aimed at middle distance events.

“I think she is a nice filly on the way up,” Walter said.

“She gives the impression she will run at least a mile however only time will tell.”

Walter hopes to test this theory with Brightest during the winter.

“I would like her to have a spring spell,” Walter said.

“It would be lovely if we could run her a couple of more times in the winter beforehand but we will wait and see about that.”

Consistent stablemate Foxstar looks well suited in the Benchmark 90 Handicap (1350m) which concludes the meeting at Rosehill this weekend however will be reliant on scratchings if she is to get a run as second emergency.

“I'm very disappointed she is only second emergency,” Walter said.

“It says a bit for Sydney racing if a mare of her quality can't get a run but that is the way it is as if she gets a run, I think her first up effort was very good and on that I think she could win.”

Foxstar is unplaced at just two of her 12 career starts and has drawn well in barrier 7 for the event.

“1350m will be good as she is still relatively fresh,” Walter said.

“She has a good second up record and I think she could run well. The rail will be out 8m so it will suit the ones closer to the lead.”

Foxstar will join Brightest in being tried over distances a mile and likely beyond during the winter.

A winner over 1600m, Foxstar's only attempt at 2000m yielded a fifth in the Group 3 Asian Racing Federation Trophy at Randwick last season.

“She has proven she is a miler and I think there is a fair chance she will run a mile and a quarter,” Walter said.

Walter will boast a three pronged attack in the Fillies and Mares 1MW Handicap (1200m) with four-year-olds Isola, Clam Chowder and Outofafrika.

Isola is currently the most fancied of the three who have each drawn wide.

“Unfortunaltely Isola has drawn a very bad gate but they are all mares who have very good form for an event like that in my view,” Walter said.

The well named Outofafrika [Johannesburg x Zebra] steps up to weekend city class for the first time while Clam Chowder resumes after working through the grades last preparation.

“Outofafrika has had a break which suits her,” Walter said.

“She will get back so the rail out 8m doesn't really suit her.

“Clam Chowder goes very well fresh so they certainly all have a chance.”

All five stablemates have been given a chance to rise through the grades gradually with Walter starting their careers in country or provincial company.

It is largely why all possess impressive strike rates with Isola's 50% place percentage the lowest of the five runners.

Foxstar, Clam Chowder and Brightest combined have missed a placing on just four occasions in 25 career starts.

“Working them through the grades is the way to go particularly under the Benchmark system because if you win your first run or two in town it could make things difficult,” Walter said.

“Nothing improves them like winning, they need confidence winning.”

Walter has also unveiled a pair of promising juveniles during the past fortnight with fillies Appearance and Matignon each winning on debut in midweek city grade.

“Matignon will go to Randwick on Saturday fortnight, I am not sure about Appearance yet,” Walter said.

Walter has trained 84 winners this season at a percentage of 16%. The Warwick Farm based trainer in addition has recorded a further 154 placings during the 2010/11 season at 30%.
