Waller's Big Four Come From Near And Far

3 minute read

Champion trainer Chris Waller's historic haul of four Group One winners on Saturday came from a variety of sources and breeding backgrounds.

Waller won eight races on Saturday in Sydney and Melbourne including four G1 victories in the Epsom Handicap (Kolding), Flight Stakes (Funstar) and ATC Metropolitan (Come Play With Me) at Randwick and the Turnbull Stakes (Kings Wil Dream) at Flemington.

He also won the G2 Hill Stakes with Verry Elleegant and G3 Breeders Plate (Global Quest) among his six wins at Randwick and the G2 Blazer Stakes at Flemington with Haut Brion Her.

KOLDING (Ocean Park x Magic Star by Danzero) led home a New Zealand-bred trifecta in the Epsom Handicap when he beat Te Akau Shark (Rip Van Winkle) and stablemate Star Of The Seas (Ocean Park).

Kolding, the first G1 winner by Cox Plate winner Ocean Park, and Te Akau Shark are both Karaka sale graduates.

Kolding was a $NZ170,000 purchase by Guy Mulcaster Bloodstock from the draft of Wentwood Grange at the 2017 NZB Premier Sale and adds to the big race success his owner Neville Morgan has enjoyed with the Waller stable, having previously raced the G1 winners Rangirangdoo and Kermadec.

Kolding has now won seven of his 14 starts and more than $1 million prize-money.

He was bred by Warren Pegg and is a half-brother to seven winners including the three-time stakes winner Sampson (Dubai Destination) and the Listed winner Miss Upstart (Snippetson).

Sampson is the winner of 11 races including the G2 Awapuni Gold Cup, G3 Trentham Stakes and Listed NZ St Leger.

Another half-sibling, a filly by Iffraaj, was sold at Karaka for $150,000 last year and remains unraced.

Warren Pegg paid only $34,000 for Magic Star at the 2008 Magic Millions National Broodmare Sale. She is a half-sister to the dual G2 winner Make Mine Magic (Canadian Silver).

Waikato Stud's Ocean Park has sired 13 winners including two at Group level in the last two weeks.

Ocean Park has been represented by 14 stakes performers including G1 placegetters Rondinella, Another Dollar, Mongolianconqueror, Arrogant and Star Of The Seas.

Funstar

FUNSTAR (Adelaide x Starspangled by Danehill) could the next big female star for the Waller stable after her hollow win over a small field in the G1 Flight Stakes.

Funstar gave Coolmore's imported WS Cox Plate winner Adelaide, a son of Galileo, his first G1 winner when she easily accounted for five rivals.

The filly was purchased for $80,000 at the 2018 Australian Easter Yearling Sale from the Bowness Stud draft by Anton Koolman Bloodstock.

Koolman was attracted to the filly as he also had her classy older half-sister Youngstar, a $200,000 yearling purchase by High Chaparral, in the Waller stable.

Their imported dam Starspangled is a Danehill sister to the G3 winner Downtown and is a daughter of the five-time G1 winner and Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe runner-up User Friendly (Slip Anchor). Starspangled has produced another five winners including the stakes placed Eleven Seconds (Encosta de Lago)

"We simply bought her as an investment because we had Youngstar and we felt she had a fair bit of ability,'' Koolman said.

"Youngstar was a maiden at the time but 10 weeks later she won the Queensland Oaks. She's turned out to be a great investment."

Funstar has now raced five times for four wins and a second for $540,100 prizemoney, becoming the first stakes winner by Adelaide when she won the G2 Tea Rose Stakes last month.

Adelaide won the G1 Secretariat Stakes at Arlington in Chicago in 2014 before coming to Australia to win the Cox Plate.

Come Play With Me winning the Metropolitan

COME PLAY WITH ME (Blackfriars x Russian Playmate by Dr Johnson) is a former Perth stayer who joined the Waller stable at the start of this season for a spring campaign after winning 12 races in WA for the Adam Durrant stable.

Come Play With Me is now the winner of 13 of his 30 starts and more than $1.2 million prizemoney after adding the G1 ATC Metropolitan (2400m) to his record..

Bred by Durrant's father Geoff, Come Play With Me's dam Russian Playmate won two Listed races up to 1800 metres. She is from the family of the Listed winner Dee I Cee (Istidaad) and his G1 placed half-sister Designated Driver (Danroad).

Russian Playmate's first foal is the four-time winner Fast As The Wind (Blackfriars).

A half-sister to the stakes-placed Canardly Miss (Verglas), Russian Playmate has an unraced two-year-old named Black Russian and a yearling colt and weanling colt all by the late Danehill sire Blackfriars.

Blackfriars, who died in 2017 in tragic circumstances after he broke a leg after undergoing surgery for colic, has had two G1 winners in seven days with Come Play With Me winning a week after the veteran Black Heart Bart recorded his sixth G1 win in the Underwood Stakes at Caulfield.

They have added to the great run being enjoyed by WA owned or bred runners in feature races with horses form the west winning four of the 12 G1 races run around Australia so far this season.

Blackfriars underlined the cost of his loss as he also sired the winners of the rich Hannans Handicap and Kalgoorlie Cup double at the famous WA country carnival.

Blackfriars sired his 41st stakes winner when Spiritual Warrior won Saturday's Listed Kalgoorlie Cup for the father-daughter combination of trainer Justin Warwick and jockey Lucy Warwick. He is one of two winners from three foals to race out of the Show A Heart mare Angelic Heart, a daughter of the multiple stakes winner Paris Heartbeat (Marooned).

The Listed Hannans Handicap was won by Tellem We're Comin (Blackfriars x Bonny Bonny by Bletchley Park), trained by Grant and Alana Williams.

Kings Will Dream

KINGS WILL DREAM (Casamento x  Road Harbour by Rodrigo De Triano) is shaping as the comeback story of the spring after he edged out another Chris Waller-trained import Finche in the G1 Turnbull Stakes at Flemington.

Kings Will Dream suffered what appeared to be a career-ending injury in the WS Cox Plate last spring but has made his way back to racing with Saturday's win just his third start since he resumed for the Waller stable after previously being trained by Darren Weir.

He is the first G1 winner by Casamento, a son of Shamardal standing at Sunnyhill Stud in the UK where he has sired 143 winners from 298 runners including 10 black type winners.

The 6YO Kings Will Dream is his only runner in Australia to date and boasts a record of seven wins and five placings from 17 starts for $1,059,418 in prize-money

King's Will Dream cost €50,000 when sold as a yearling at the Goffs Orby sale. He then made only 7500 guineas when offered as an unraced 2YO at the 2016 Tattersalls' October Horses-In-Training Sale where he was bought by Highflyer Bloodstock.

He won a maiden at Pontefract before he was shipped to Australia, winning his first five starts before three G1 placings when trained by Weir.

Kings Will Dream is out of the unraced mare Road Harbour, who is the dam of six other winners.

Kings Will Dream is her only stakes winner.

Road Harbour is a half-sister to US stakes winner Dance Dreamer (Nureyev) from the G2 winner and G1 placed Revasser (Riverman).

Kolding followed his game narrow win in the Bill Ritchie Handicap (Gr 3, 1400m) at this track a fortnight ago with a very good win, advancing to Group 1 level here. He began well and after having a nice trip in third place he moved up to the leader (Dreamforce) nearing the home turn. He went to the front at the 300m and then lifted gamely when challenged under his light weight (50.5kg) to score a very good win, his seventh win from 14 starts. The co-favourite Te Akau Shark settled midfield and deep from his wide barrier (15) before improving (deep) from the 600m. He then commenced a strong run on straightening and kept running on well for (short head) second after conceding 4kg to the winner. Star Of The Seas raced in fourth place, moved up well on turning for home and kept fighting well to finish a good third. Gem Song had a nice run in seventh place on the rails. He got along the inner on straightening and then held on nicely for (3.5 lengths) fourth. Rock settled towards the tail of the 19-horse field, was 16th at the home turn and the kept finishing on well in the straight for (4.1 lengths), staging a good performance.
