Queensland Stud Celebrates Slipper Success

3 minute read

The Golden Slipper win of Kiamichi will prove a boon for her sire Sidestep who stands in Queensland.

The Golden Slipper win of Godolphin filly Kiamichi will prove a great boost to the Queensland breeding industry.

KIamichi is by Sidestep out of Ouachita and is a dream result for the Queensland based Telemon Thoroughbreds operation.

Sidestep, by Exceed and Excel, stood last season for $7700 at Telemon Thoroughbreds at Innisplain in south east Queensland.

It was the first year of a two-year partnership agreement with Darley for Sidestep to stand at Telemon.

Saturday's win in the richest two-year-old race in the world has shot Sidestep to the top of the first season sire tables by earnings.

Telemon Thoroughbreds owner Dan Fletcher said the past week had been unbelievable with Kiamichi winning the Group 3 Magic Night Stakes to secure a place in the Golden Slipper and then claiming the big race.

"It's what dreams are made of and it was a dream result for Sidestep. He was runner-up in the Golden Slipper in 2013 and now his daughter has gone one better, but what it means for his stud career is exciting," Fletcher said.

Sidestep served 57 mares last year but is expected to get far more in the upcoming season.

Kiamichi (Sidestep x Ouachita ny Canny Lad) is the first 2YO to win the Magic Night-Golden Slipper double since Bint Marscay in 1993.

She also avenged her sire Sidestep who ran second to Overreach in the 2013 Golden Slipper.

Of all the Godolphin representatives, Kiamichi comes from the first crop of Sidestep, who stood for just $11,000 that year.

Sidestep is one of two winners he has had in his first crop racing this season.

Kiamichi's dam Quachita also produced her older stakes winning half-brother Cossetot, by another Darley sire Epaulette, among her six winners from seven to races.

Ouachita, who has a weanling filly by Animal Kingdom, is from Peach, the outstanding Vain mare and dam of G1 winners Denman (Lonhro) and Preserve (Canny Lad).

Listed winner Rio Osa is also a sister to Ouachita.

Godolphin-raced filly Kiamichi followed up her good win in the Magic Night Stakes (Gr 3, 1200m) here last Saturday with another bold performance, again showing her talent on heavy tracks. She was smartly away from her wide barrier (14) but worked hard in the early stages before crossing to the lead at the 700m. She got a break at the home turn and then fought back gamely for a very good win, her third win in five starts. Her stablemate Microphone had a nice trip in eighth place on the rails from his inside barrier (1), got through on the inner at the home turn, went to second at the 200m and kept battling well to hold that position, beaten a length. Another Godolphin runner Lyre did very well in running third. She settled back in 13th place, switched deep at the 300m and then ran on in very good style to take the minor placing at her first start since winning the Blue Diamond Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) on February 23. Loving Gaby was wide early on from barrier 12, settled in eighth place (but wide). She put in a run on straightening and kept finishing well for (1.8 lengths) in a really smart effort at only her third start. Time To Reign raced in tenth place, improved between runners at the home turn and kept battling on quite well for (3.8 lengths) fifth. Anaheed led in the early stages before settling in second place and then held on nicely for (4 lengths) sixth. Yes Yes Yes did well in running on late, wide out, from a clear last for (5.5 lengths) seventh after starting from the outside barrier (16), while the favourite Cosmic Force had a good trip in sixth place on the rails but just battled on in the straight for (6.3 lengths) eighth.
