Nothing Foolish About Mackinnon Stakes Winner

3 minute read

The upset win by 5YO gelding Trap For Fools in the G1 LKS Mackinnon Stakes at Flemington provided the late sire Poet’s Voice with his second Group 1 winner.

Poet’s Voice, a son of Dubawi, is the sire of 16 stakes winners including this year’s G1 King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes winner Poet’s Word.

He died of a heart attack this year at the age of 11 after earlier shuttling to Australia from 2012 to 2016 to stand at Darley Kelvinside in NSW.

His other Australian-bred winners include G2 winner Viridine while his son Poet’s Word is due to stand his UK first season in 2019.

Trap For Fools became the first G1 winner for his young Warrnambool trainer Jarrod McLean when he beat the Irish Derby winner Latrobe (Camelot) by a head with last week’s Victoria Derby winner Extra Brut (Domesday) third.

Trap For Fools (Poet’s Voice x Old Money by Old Spice) is raced by his breeders Distinct Racing & Breeding and has won 13 of his 31 career starts and $1,821,380.

Boasting a storing WA pedigree, he is one of two winners out of the G1-winning mare Old Money, a sister to G2 winner Old Cobbler and a half-sister to Moonfire (Geiger Counter), the dam of multiple Listed winner Moonlight Bay (Catbird).

Old Money won the G1 WA Derby and two G2 races including the WA Oaks before she was sold to America by her owner-breeder Bob Peters.

She returned to Australia after producing just one US-bred foal when agent Damon Gabbedy bought her out of a Keeneland Broodmare Sale for $US50,000 for another Perth owner and breeder Geoff Evans.

Trap For Fools was her third foal following her return to Australia.

Old Money's final foal by Carlton House is a 3YO in work in Perth with Lindsey Smith, the original trainer of Trap For Fools before he was sent to McLean.

Trap For Fools was scratched from last month's G3 Coongy Cup at Caulfield after Racing Victoria stewards charged McLean over having the gelding stabled at another property prior to that race.

The gelding was then left out of the G1 Cox Plate field by the Moonee Valley Racing Club committee when deemed not up to the standard required for that race. He finished second in the G2 Moonee Valley Cup on the same day.

Classy imported stayer Jaameh became the 65th stakes winner for shuttle sire Iffraaj when he won the G3 Queen Elizabeth Stakes at Flemington.

European-bred Jaameh (Iffraaj x Miss Gibraltar by Rock Of Gibraltar) is trained by the Lindsay Park team with co-trainer David Hayes predicting he will win a major staying race in 2019 after just missing out on a Melbourne Cup start last week.

"He's a genuine two miler but he hasn't got to two miles yet," Hayes said.

"I think he would have been a top five finisher in the Melbourne Cup. He's a real stayer.”

Jaameh’s Queen Elizabeth win was his fourth in Australia and his first stakes victory. He won three races in the UK before landing in Australia.

Iffraaj is the sire of nine G1 winners including NZ-bred and trained classic winners Gingernuts, Jon Snow and Turn Me Loose.

Another son Ribchester is covering his first book of mares at Darley Kelvinside in NSW this spring while another son Jungle Cat, a recent G1 winner in Melbourne, will go to stud in Ireland in 2019.

Fastnet Rock posted a Flemington double and a new Group winner when Sydney-trained Dreamforce won the G3 Chatham Stakes.

The John Thompson-trained Dreamforce (Fastnet Rock x Eskimo Queen by Shinko King) may have booked himself a trip to Perth for next month’s G1 Railway Stakes with a tough on-speed win.

Dreamforce won the Listed Winter Stakes at Rosehill at his last run before going for a spell and was third run back on Saturday.

Passed in when offered by Kitchwin Hills at the 2014 Australian Easter Yearling Sale, Dreamforce is one of 142 stakes winner by dual hemisphere champion Fastnet Rock.

He has put together an impressive record with nine wins and seven placings from 21 starts with prizemoney in excess of $580,000.

Dreamforce is the best of three winners from Eskimo Queen, an outstanding racemare who won the G1I Queensland Oaks and G1 Coolmore Classic.

Her current two year-old colt by Wandjina sold for $120,000 at Magic Millions this year. She has a yearling filly to follow by Fastnet Rock.

Fastnet Rock is also the sire of Loyalty Man, who put barrier issues behind him to secure his first victory for almost two years in Saturday’s 3AW Trophy (1600m) at Flemington.

The Mike Moroney-trained gelding was having his third start back after a year off the track due to a series of barrier mishaps.

"This horse has done a really good job because I thought for a while he wouldn't race again after the injuries he suffered," Moroney said.

“He broke three ribs and crushed a vertebrae. The diagnosis wasn't very good for a while but we persevered and gave him the time out."

Classy Sebring three-year-old Ringerdingding may back up in next weekend’s Sandown Guineas following his breathtaking last-to-first win in the Listed Springtime Stakes at Flemington on Saturday.

Bred by Gary Johnson and Three Bridges Thoroughbreds – who offered the colt at the 2017 Melbourne Premier Yearling Sale – Ringerdingding (Sebring x Maybe) was purchased by B2B Bloodstock for $170,000.

It was his third career win and first stakes success from just 10 starts and in the process provided Sebring with his 51st stakes winner.

"That was some sort of win," said trainer Darren Weir. "He'll be entered for the Sandown Guineas next week and we'll see what sort of week he has.

“He's got it all ahead of him. He's got the pedigree and the type to back it up so if he can win a good race he will be a popular horse."

Highly consistent gelding Trap For Fools won his 13th race (with eight placings) in 31 starts with a gamely victory here, his first at Group 1 level. He began well and went to the front as expected and then settled nicely for John Allen. He grabbed a break shortly after rounding the home turn and then dug deep over the closing stages to score narrowly but well. Latrobe, winner of the Irish Derby (Gr 1, 1m 4f) in June, staged a very good performance at his first start since September and his first start in Australia. He settled in eighth place, one off the rails, before commencing his move coming to the home turn. He then sprinted quickly, challenged strongly at the 100m and fought really well for (head) second. The Victoria Derby (Gr 1, 2500m) winner Extra Brut raced at the tail of the ten-horse field before switching out at the 300m. He then ran on strongly for a close-up third in a really smart performance in this Group 1 weight-for-age race. Prized Icon raced in fourth place (one out and one back), moved up nicely on straightening and then battled well for (2.2) lengths fourth. The Empire Rose Stakes (Gr 1, 1600m) winner Shillelagh raced in last place, improved between runners on turning for home but was badly checked at the 200m before finishing an unlucky (3.2 lengths) fifth. Doubt Defying raced outside the leader (Trap For Fools) to the home turn, only weakening from the 200m for (4.5 lengths) sixth in a promising effort, advancing to this class. The favourite Blair House settled in seventh place on the rails, got a split on straightening, went to second at the 200m but disappointed, just battling on from there for (5.3 lengths) seventh.
