Black Type Treble For Fastnet Rock

3 minute read

It was hard to keep up with the surge of international black type wins recorded by Fastnet Rock on Saturday.

The great Saturday for Fastnet Rock started in New Zealand and continued in the UK and Ireland. At the end his runners had registered win in G2, G3 and Listed races taking his tally of stakes winners to 96.

• UNBEATEN Kiwi colt Heroic Valour (Fastnet Rock x Myrrh, by Nassipour) showed he had taken up as a three-year-old where he left off last season with first-up win in the Listed Northland Breeders Plate at Ruakaka for his fourth career win.

The Stephen Autridge and Jamie Richards-trained Heroic Valour won last season’s G1 Diamond Stakes and is now favourite for the G1 NZ 2000 Guineas at Riccarton in October.

Heroic Valour, a three-quarter brother to the G1 Doncaster Handicap winner Triple Honour, was a $400,000 NZB Karaka Premier Sale yearling purchase from the Curraghmore Stud draft by Te Akau Stud’s David Ellis.

Ellis also purchased the full-brother for $510,000 from the same sale earlier this year.

“There’s a lot of pressure bringing a horse like this back to the races as David Ellis bought him at Karaka with the intention of making him into a stallion,”Richards said.

Bred, foaled and raised at Coolmore Australia, Heroic Valour is one of eight winners from 11 foals to race produced by the Nassipour mare Myrrh.

Heroic Valour is her second stakes winner, following Triple Honour (Honours List).

RIVET gave Fastnet Rock a significant UK Group win when he won the G2 Champagne Stakes over seven furlongs on St Leger day at Doncaster.

Rivet (Fastnet Rock x Starship by Galileo) is trained by William Haggas for the Starship Partnership, an eclectic mix that include 87-year-old South African Des Scott who has been racing horse for more than 60 years, former champion jockey Lester Piggott and the Coolmore partners Michael Tabor and John Magnier.

Piggott bred Rivet's dam Starship with the colt being a half-brother to the G3 winner and G2 placed Alexander Pope (Danehill Dancer) who went on to race in Hong Kong as Packing Tycoon.

Starship is a daughter of Ouncil Rock, a General Assembly half-sister to Haggas’ former sprinting star Superstar Leo (College Chapel), Europe’s champion juvenile filly who won the G2 Flying Childers at Doncaster and the G3 Norfolk Stakes at Royal Ascot and was second in the G1 Phoenix Stakes and G1 Prix de l’Abbaye de Longchamp against the older horses.

Super Leo’s progeny include the dual G3 winner Enticing (Pivotal) and the Listed winner Sentaril (Danehill Dancer), while her half-sister New York (Danzero) produced the imported G1 Turnbull Stakes winner December Draw (Medecis).

The family also includes G1 Yorkshire Oaks third Rockerlong and G3 winner Glatisant, dam of the G1 2000 Guineas-winning sire Footstepsinthesand, G1 winner Pedro The Great and Frappe, dam of the dual G1 winer and young sire Power.

Rivet was runner-up on debut at Ascot on July 22 before winning his maiden at York’s Ebor meeting on August 19.

• AT Leopardstown Dermot Weld sent out Zhukova (Fastnet Rock x Nightime, by Galileo) to win the G3 Enterprise Stakes.

The progressive filly, who was bred by Weld’s late mother Marguerite, is now set to be tested in G1 company in the Fillies and Mares on British Champions Weekend at Ascot.

“It’s pleasing to have bred her with my late mother,” Weld said. “She’s out of Nightime who gave my mother a great day when winning the Irish 1000 Guineas.”

Zhukova extended family features the G3 winner Tycoon’s Drama (Last Tycoon), dam of the Listed winner Desert Drama (Green Desert) who in turn produced the G1 placed Endless Drama (Lope de Vega).

Zhukova, an emphatic seven and a half length winner of the G3 Blue Wind Stakes in May, beat the Epsom Derby runner-up US Army Ranger (Galileo) by a half length.

She is one of 18 Northern Hemisphere-bred stakes winners by Fastnet Rock.
