Dundeel’s impact as a second crop sire continues to grow with the former classic winner producing his first juvenile Group One winner at Ellerslie on Saturday.
After his first crop racing last season produced the South African G1 winner Atyaab, Melbourne Group winners Global Exchange and The Inevitable, New Zealand stakeswinner Cutadeel and Group-placed colt Dealmaker, Dundeel’s second crop of 2YOs this season has included three brilliant debut winners Yourdeel, Castelvecchio and Pandano.
Castelvecchio progressed to win the $2 million ATC Millennium at Warwick Farm last month and finish third in the G3 Skyline Stakes while Yourdeel’s trajectory has been even more dramatic. He dead-heated for third in the Karaka Million on January 26 then - after being gelded – he ran away from his rivals to win the G3 Matamata Slipper by six lengths before he became Dundeel’s first 2YO G1 winner in the Sistema Sires’ Produce Stakes at Ellerslie.
Trained by Te Akau Racing’s Jamie Richards at Matamata, Yourdeel (Dundeel x Miss Zapper by Red Ransom) was originally bought by Little Avondale Stud for $30,000 from breeder Dan Myers at the 2017 NZB National Weanling Sale at Karaka. He returned to the Karaka sale ring for the 2018 NZB National Yearling Sale where he was knocked down for $100,000 to Chris Rutten who races the gelding with John Norwood and Rod Preston.
Dundeel now heads the New Zealand second season sires table and is third behind Savabeel and Showcasing on the NZ 2YO Sires’ Premiership. In Australia he’s a clear third on the second season sires list with 21 winners, three stakeswinners and $2.5 million prizemoney.
Dundeel’s eight stakeswinners from his first 60 runners give him an excellent strike rate of 13.3%.Yourdeel (Dundeel x Miss Zapper by Red Ransom) has now had five starts for three wins, two placings and $244,350 in prize-money.
