Overdue Breakthrough For Nicconi

Brilliant speedster Nature Strip emulated his sire NIcconi by providing the stallion with his first Group 1 winner in Saturday’s ATC Galaxy at Rosehill.

Nicconi won the Galaxy in 2009 and went on to win the a second G1 sprint in the 2010 Lightning Stakes at Flemington before embarking on his stud career.

He has since become a consistent sire of stakes winners with 24 on the board including five this season.

Nature Strip (Nicconi x Strikeline by Desert Sun) has had only 15 starts for 10 wins and two placings, earning $1,232,085.

He has had an interesting career to date as he has passed through the hands of five trainers since he was passed in for $90,000 on a reserve of $120,000) at the 2016 Melbourne Premier Yearling Sale.

He debuted as a spring 3YO winning five of his first eight starts before claiming his first Listed race last year before an amazing six lengths win over champion filly Sunlight in the Listed Lightning Stakes at Morphettville.

However he had since failed in G1 attempts in the Moir Stakes last September and last month’s G1 Oakleigh Plate when he was having his first start for Chris Waller before breaking through in the heavy conditions at Rosehill.

Nature Strip is one of three winners from the G3-winning mare Strikeline, making him a half-brother to Listed winner The Barrister (Star Witness) who now races as High Volatility in Hong Kong.

Strikeline is a half-sister to G3 winner Bashful Girl (Perugino) from the Listed winner Strike High (Pre Emptive Strike).

Strikeline has an unraced three-year-old sister to Nature Strip and a 2YO by Shamus Award. She was covered by Savabeel last spring.

Having his third start for new trainer Chris Waller, Nature Strip broke through for his first Group 1 victory here, his tenth win from 15 starts. He began well from barrier 9 and with the early pace not overquick, James McDonald soon took him to the lead. He then set a good tempo, got a clear break on straightening and although tiring in the closing stages, he held on to score by the barest of margins. Pierata raced back in eighth place until into the home straight and then ran on strongly to fail by a nose for second in a really smart effort at his second run back. Easy Eddie raced in sixth place, one off the rails, moved up well (wide) at the home turn, went to second at the 200m and then battled on really well, advancing in class here. Encryption was back in tenth place at the home turn and made good ground for (2.7 lengths) fourth, while the favoured pair Redzel weakened from fourth at the home turn under his top weight (59.5kg) for (6.4 lengths) eighth and the three-year-old Graff tired from fifth at the home turn to finish (8.5 lengths) last in the heavy 8 conditions.
